Broadcast executive John Greene served Capitol Broadcasting Company for more than three decades – steering WRAL-TV through the pivotal 1980’s when the CBC flagship gained national recognition as one of the most dominant and decorated local television stations in the country. He was also the point person for the High Definition (HD) conversion project in the ‘90s.

Greene was recruited by WRAL station manager Fred Barber and joined WRAL-TV in 1976 as Station Operations Manager.

Greene was named WRAL-TV’s Vice President and General Manager in late 1979. In 1984 he took on corporate responsibilities when he was promoted to Senior Vice President of the company. In that expanded role Greene continued direct management of WRAL-TV, but oversaw CBC’s three other television stations as well.

This interview was conducted in 2006 as part of WRAL’s 50th Anniversary celebration. The video is in raw form, meaning that you will see the camera move quickly and adjust to frame the next shot. Those quick moves would be covered with another shot in post-production before airing.

You will hear Greene explain how WRAL sports anchor Tom Suiter was persuaded to come back to the anchor desk after a lengthy absence from the anchor desk due to problems with his vocal chords.
